First, what is a shampoo bar? Instead of using harsh detergents, silicones, parabens and artificial fragrances/colors like their liquid counterpart, shampoo bars are made up of gentle cleansers, essential oils, vegetable oils, extracts and conditioners. They’ve started popping up all over lately and for good reason. They are better for you and your hair, because you aren’t exposed to harmful chemicals, they last much longer than conventional shampoo, they make travel a cinch, and they are great for the environment!
But, Not All Shampoo Bars Are The Same!
If you’ve tried a shampoo bar and it stripped your hair or made it really frizzy, then you’ve most likely used a bar of soap. That’s right, many companies make “Shampoo Bars” that are made in the same manner as soap, but sell them as shampoo. Since there is no ‘marketing’ police, companies can get away with calling these soap bars shampoo, soap-prise! These soap-shampoo bars may seem to work for a short time and even clean the hair, but in the long run, are doing more harm than good. Being that soap has a very high pH and your hair doesn’t, it will cause the hair to become stripped of its natural oils, dull the color, cause static, dry out the hair and scalp, in turn clogging the follicle with dead skin and trapped bacteria, all of which could lead to hair loss.
Should I Be Using A Shampoo Bar?
We think so, but you decide.
Your scalp and hair need a pH balanced product in order to maintain a healthy state.
A good Shampoo Bar is not made with sodium hydroxide, aka lye which is used for soap making. So, when shopping for a Shampoo Bar, be sure to scan the ingredients for 🚫sodium hydroxide.
Then, why is soap ok for my skin? To put it simply, for most people, your skin can handle a higher pH. But, that’s not saying it’s good for the skin either. And, many people actually do have trouble with regular, high pH soap, they’ll suffer from extreme dryness, sensitivity, rough patches, premature aging and eczema flare-ups. This is the reason many people use a separate wash for the face, instead of soap.
