Night Time is the Right Time!

Night Time is the Right Time

Whether it be yoga, reading or some other form of relaxation, you probably use the time before bed to wind down. Like your body and mind, your skin needs to do the same. There are simple steps you can take to prepare your skin for sleep, the time when it rejuvenates and heals from UV exposure and other stressors of the day. Overnight is when the most cell turn-over and healing happens, as it is time spent out of the sun and elements. So, the time before bed is the best time to prime the skin. Using the right products will feed it the nutrients it needs to activate its regenerative mechanism while you sleep.

Serums and intensive moisturizers are great for supplying the skin with much needed actives overnight, because they go deep into the layers of the skin. Examples of popular actives are AHAs and BHAs (alpha and beta hydroxy acids) like Lactic, Glycolic and Salicylic acids. These are good for most skin types and are used to treat many skin related issues. They slough away dead cells to reveal new skin, unclog pores, fight acne, are great sources of antioxidants and increase collagen, leaving stronger skin with a more youthful appearance.

Another active, Vitamin A is a great weapon against aging, among it's many benefits, it can repair tissue and fight wrinkles.

Another active, Vitamin C is great for all skin types and offers crucial benefits to the skin. Vitamin C offers brightening and evening of the skin tone, excellent hydration, boosts collagen and firms skin.

Though, problems arise because, many creams/serums contain harsh, synthetic forms of these actives, which can be irritating and damaging.

Luckily, there is another way to get all of the good effects and none of the bad, it's by using products with ingredients that naturally contain these actives, for example great ways to reap the benefits of vitamin A are to use products with ingredients like green tea, rosehip and carrot seed oils, to name a few.

Because all of the aforementioned actives clarify the skin, they allow for deeper penetration of necessary nutrients that the skin receives during the day.

If you choose a product with actives, be sure to read all directions for possible drug interactions and avoid going in the sun without a proper sunscreen. With actives, some irritation is normal, in other cases, individuals with sensitive skin may experience more irritation, which is not normal. It’s good to do a patch test by applying a small amount of a new product to the inside of your arm and wait 24 hours to see if any irritation occurs. In any case, when choosing an active containing product, be sure to work it into your routine slowly. You can do this by buying products with a lower percentage/content of the chosen active and/or using it less frequently and increasing over time.

If you are intimidated by the thought of buying an active-containing product, another way to reap the benefits, as mentioned before, is to buy products that naturally contain the desired active within its ingredients. At Mia Botanica, there are many worry-free products that contain oils, herbs and extracts that offer the same, if not more benefits as active-containing products. Our chosen, natural ingredients are both powerful and gentle.

In order to get the best results from your endeavors, in addition to your skin care routine, you’ll want to get eight hours of rest, drink lots of water and of course, exercise! Sweating is the best way for us to release toxic build-up from within the body and skin. But, because breakouts are a part of life, all products (especially unsuspecting ones, like hair care products), may need to be examined. Because, as we sweat, the build-up from these products drips onto our faces, chests and backs causing unwanted clogging and breakouts.

Not surprisingly, natural products are less likely to cause breakouts, because your skin will not have extra toxins to sweat out.

If you are still seeing unfavorable results from your skin, examine your lifestyle, diet and all products for possible inflammatory triggers and allergens.

The body works as a whole!

Your products should be chosen according to your specific needs and your washes, masks, toners, serums and moisturizers should be as natural, safe and gentle as possible.
