Looking to Detox your life, your home and the planet, but feel overwhelmed by the mass produced, chemical laden products and plastic packaging? Because, it seems like these products are everywhere, it’s easy to feel like one person can’t make a difference.
Not true, you can start by making small changes that can make a big impact. Just the act of simplifying your routine ie., making or buying products that do not utilize harmful chemicals and plastics and switching to things like bamboo toothbrushes and shampoo bars. Did you know that just toothbrushes create 50 million pounds of waste per year, all plastics make up 17.6 billion pounds per year and the average person throws away 185 pounds of plastic per year! And, that’s only in the U.S.!!! Luckily, many countries, states and cities are beginning to ban single use plastics, things like straws, bags and even fabrics that unfortunately, end up in oceans and landfills.
Aside from the plastic waste, you have the health aspect with which to contend. Most conventional shampoos contain harsh detergents which are usually in the form of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate aka SLS (it is also called other names so, it can be in products without our knowing). These shampoos strip the hair/scalp of its natural oils thus, causing the scalp to produce more oils to compensate for the loss, which makes it necessary to wash more and use more shampoo! SLS is a dreadful chemical used to create the foaming action that occurs while washing. It is also used in many other body care products including soaps, mouthwashes and toothpastes. Aside from being harsh on the skin and causing irritation for many, it is known to cause a host of health problems including cancer, organ toxicity and endocrine disruption.
Luckily, we now have access to environmentally and health conscious products and can get started or continue with our efforts in making the changes that our bodies and planet desperately need!
